OBSESSIONS. Examples of redundancy and cyclical persistence


OBSESSIONS. Examples of redundancy and cyclical persistence present an exercise of (artistic) exhibitionism to highlight certain constant repetition mechanisms in works of art.

Based on a positive and enthusiastic interpretation of obsession – a necessary approach due to the intensity and faith in one’s performance or wishes – the exhibition explores the obsessive behaviour of certain artists when defining their work and their interests in the field or art. These repetitive and nonconformist attitudes lead them, beyond the possible success or failure of their works and even regardless of their social or commercial acceptance, to repeat (in an almost unhealthy manner) the same ideas over and over again.

The Aparador at the Abelló Museum is a space to exhibit without rules, time-tables or re-established codes, similar to the human being’s obsessive nature, incapable of submitting to control or reason. In this sense it therefore becomes an exhibition and meeting point between the author and the receiver to publicly share without shame the recurrent obsessions defining the purpose of art and artists in a far too rigid society to accept and appreciate such behaviour.

Obsessions includes the works of twelve artists who, beyond their themes and/or specific forms (from drawing to video, installation or performance), find one of the main drives behind their behaviour in compulsive obsession. In summary, a sequenced collection of redundancy and cyclical persistence examples exposed as a critical confrontation with citizens and their own obsessions.
